IMMACULATE CONCEPTION SCHOOL
HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
JUNE, 2010

It’s hard to believe that another school year is just about over and we’re already planning for next year. Thank you to all of you for your support of our school this year. It’s the involvement of our school families that makes ICS such a special place.

Here are the updates from the JNUE HSA meeting:

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Remember that we have off on both Friday, May 28 and Monday, May 31 for a long Memorial Day weekend.

UPCOMING EVENTS

GRADUATION EVENTS: Please check the school calendar for the full listing of graduation events. Attention 7th grade families, a number of volunteers (adults and students) are needed on the evening of June 18th from 5-10 pm to assist with the graduation reception. If you are available, please contact your class rep.

WELCOME NEW FAMILY EVENT: This year’s welcoming reception for new families is scheduled for Wednesday, August 25th at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. Volunteers are needed to assist with the event and talk with new families. If you are available, please contact the HSA at icsisthebest@yahoo.com

BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC: September seems a long way off, but planning is underway for the back to school picnic. Please put it on your calendar - the picnic will be held on Friday, September 10th in the early evening. Volunteers are needed to assist with the event and help with games for the children. Volunteering doesn’t mean you will be away from the fun or your family! You can help to run a game for 15 minutes and have your own children play in it as well! If you will be available, please contact the HSA at icsisthebest@yahoo.com.

GRADUATION EVENTS: Please note that this years graduation events have been moved up one day to Thursday June 17. This move has also made necessary the move of the Pre-K 3 moving up day to Wednesday June 16.

RECENT EVENTS

CARNIVAL: Thank you to everyone who worked on this year’s Carnival! The dedication of our volunteers made this year’s carnival run very smoothly. The addition of the Father’s Club food stand was great and it was so nice to see more dads getting involved.

There have been many different versions floating around of the incident in Tuckahoe following the Friday night carnival. Much of the information presented on the news was incorrect. There was no incident that occurred on our school grounds or at our Carnival. If a reporter approaches you, please add no comment and refer them to either Ms. Harten or Fr. Raaser.

Profits from this Carnival were down slightly from last year. Game participation was down and overall attendance on Thursday night appeared to be low as well.

We are in discussions with the Carnival company to make next year’s Carnival newer with some fresh ideas.

Ms. Harten asks any Carnival volunteers who may still have the blue “ask me about my school” buttons to please return them to the office so that they may be used for future events.

PLANNING FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CLASS REP? Class reps are still needed for some classes next year. If you are interested, please submit your form ASAP. Those who have already submitted their forms will be contacted during the summer.

INTERESTED IN CO-CHAIRING AN EVENT? Additional event co-chairs are still needed for the Walkathon and Christmas Boutique. If you are interested in helping please contact the HSA at icsisthebest@yahoo.com.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS: We have received many new ideas for after school clubs from both parents and students. A committee is working on the offerings for the Fall. One problem they face however is that there are a lot more suggestions for clubs than there are people volunteering to work with students after school.

If you would be interested in leading an after school club, please contact the HSA at icsisthebest@yahoo.com. Recommendations of vendors that could offer a program at our school would be appreciated as well. Some areas of interest to our students included: pottery, art, chess, drama, contemporary choir, football, dance and yoga.

FUNDRAISING: After receiving all of your feedback there will be some changes coming to our fundraising practices next year. More information will be coming on that. A few of our fundraisers will disappear (likely entertainment books, wrapping paper, cookie dough) and some new ideas will be coming.

SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION: Congratulations to Miss Collins’ first grade who were the winners of this year’s Boxtops Collection Contest! The class enjoyed a pizza lunch. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Boxtops campaign this year. We raised $700, which is more than double our collections from the previous year. Our goal is higher for next year with our eye on earning $1,000!

Keep collecting over the summer and be on the look out for specials on Boxtops products as well as bonus certificates as back to school nears. Deposit your Boxtops in the collection container in church, or hold on to them until the start of next year’s collection contest!

Welch’s has recently been added as a Boxtops brand. For a complete list of products, visit the website at www.btfe.com Also remember the Boxtops Marketplace as you shop for back to school. A percentage of your online shopping will come back to the school when you shop at major retailers through the Boxtops website.

A WORD FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Ms. Harten reported that the first day of school will be Wednesday, September 8th.

Summer reading lists are being finalized. They will be posted onto the website and School Notes.

Work is still underway to market the school. Our website needs some work and is one of the areas of focus. Anyone with website development experience or suggestions for the website, please contact the HSA at icsisthebest@yahoo.com. Classes are filling up for next year, especially in Pre-K. There are only a few Pre-K spots still open for the 3 year olds and for the 4 year old 4 half day program. If you know anyone interested in Pre-K, please have them contact the school as soon as possible. Once the programs are full a waiting list will be created. Students may still be added to the elementary grades.

Congratulations to our graduates! To those families who are moving on, we will miss you and wish you well. Come back and visit at some of our events.

We wish you and your family a great Summer!
